How to find the person who can help you get ahead at work | Carla Harris
The workplace is often presented as a meritocracy, where you can succeed by putting your head down and working hard. Wall Street veteran Carla Harris …
In an ideal world this would be deemed as dirty politics or immoral, but this is our reality. I appreciate her for being honest with us. I am someone who has never sought anyone at a strong position to do me a favor at my work. But now I realize whenever there is a "human element" involved you need that whether it is work, family or any other place. Time to change myself.
THAT WAS WONDERFUL TEACHING MISS HARRIS GREAT TEACHING, TO LEARN, WOO, I DIFFENENTLY NEED SPONSERS, POWERFUL PEOPLES WITH MONEY AND POWER BEHIND ME, I NEED THIS VERY MUCH, AND TO LEARN HOW TO BUILD MORE RELATION SHIPS, WITH PEOPLES, YOU TOUGHT ME SOME THING, I DID NOT NO, I THANK YOU MISS HARRIS, YOUR A VERY INTELLEGENT SMART AND WIZE LADY, THANK YOU MISS HARRIS FOR THIS TEACHING, THIS WAS VERY POWERFUL LEARNING GOD BLESS YOU AMEN.
I wish someone had showed me this before I joined the work force post graduation! I was always taught to work hard and put my head down but on raising my head, I would see those who were not putting in the same level of effort be promoted.
Why? They were better at navigating workplace politics and most importantly prioritised developing relationships with key decision makers. Thanks Carla for helping me to finally connect the dots!
Great talk but can easily be misunderstood (as lobbying and corruption of some kind). Promotion is great, it can also limit your ability to be critical of the establishment.
My summary recap:#Performance Currency – Deliver results above expectations – It gets you noticed and create a reputation, get promoted early, attract a sponsor, become more visible. #Relationship Currency – Invest in people in your world. Ask people to help you after connecting with others. Invest time to connect & engage. Give them the opportunity to know you. #Sponsors – Have a seat at the decision table; Exposure to your work; Must have power. Ask for one by sayingI've had a great year and I am ready for a promotion. You know me and my work and aware of feedback. Relationship will prompt you to say yes. or says no if he doesn't know your work, may not have the power, doesn't like you. Who's carrying your paper into the room? #Sponsors – Invited into the room and have a seat at the table. Use your voice to speak and support people worthy of your support. Grow your power by giving it away. Use your voice

Strong message
Can your direct manager be your sponsor? Or is it considered unfair bias?
