Gmos are in fast food, sodas, highly processed foods, etc. If we continue this system, there is going to be more malnutrition and famine. They say gmos is going feed billions more people. The truth is the opposite. Billions are going to starve if people dont wake up.
GMO plants are patented and some are seedless. the seedless gmos have to be bought and can get the farmer in debt. 2nd if the gmo plant had another weakness that led to it dying its usfulness would be diminished 3rd since there patentended if the gmo plant mixes with other plants from its sourounding the farmer of that the mixed plant would be liable to court action by the patented owner i understand why gmo can be good but i dont like the monopoly about it.
Can't even begin to say how stupidly excited I got when I found out about this new channel! The super-detailed video style of Real Engineering covering more topics in biology is a dream come true.
You see if we didn’t have round up ready crops we couldn’t use basically the most effective herbicide ever, so the weeds would choke out our crops therefore the world starts to starve.
While it is good that corn borers and other related pests cannot penetrate Bt corns, other Lepidopterans such as the monarch butterfly are also affected by it. The pollens from the Bt corn can reach the milkweed (where monarch butterflies feed) that is up to 60m away, and the butterflies think it is a food.
GMO's have benefits and risks. Are the benefits worth the risks? Everyone must decide for themselves. Dishonest industry practices induces fear and doubt of benefits. Thank you for the video it helps me to decide.
But than, do we really really ned these gmo,s or only because we farm in a specific way. Do we really need golden rice, or do we need also a carrot to go with our diet. Is it really needed, or only another way to make agriculture more and more technical (and earn some corporations lots of $$$$) Cheers !
SCIENCE > herbicide and insecticide kill micro bacteria in soil that assist plants to grow. This in-turn will decrease food production AND decrease nutrition in food. Makes the soil hard, and this in-turn makes it harder for farmers and farm equipment. SCIENCE is great if you listen open your eyes and learn, not twist, deceive and lie.
Not with this "russian bot an troll" thing again. As if russia is resposible for everything you dont like. Like every russian and only russians are online trolls.
Whenever you have a bunch of illiterates (and I include people with such degrees as female studies and drum playing) making hysterical decisions for us as a whole. I’m suspect. GMOs have been used for years with no issues. I’ll chalk the people with issues with GMOs with the people who say immunizations cause autism, etc.
I'm a biotechnologist too and i don't think GMOs are bad the are very necessary, as Due to green revolution in India it saved millions of lives in India Thanks to our great scientist HARGOVIND KHURANA.
Education is not really a priority in the Philippines, it is made that way so our politicians can get reelected by making people vote those who can entertain or make rhetoric better. Most of the time they vote those who give dole outs and not the ones who make good policy.
They're labeling the entire technology of genetic modification as harmful. Which is absurd. Technology can't be bad as a whole. What can be bad is only the CURRENT VERSION of a technology or the PURPOSE it's used for. So, instead of banning it entirely, it's use should be postponed, until we develop a better version. Banning GMO entirely is anti-civilizational and backward.
And GM is probably not even harmful, as the narrator says.
pretty bothersome when most people who so vehemently oppose GM crops don't even know that genetic modification even is, usually thinking it's some kind of crazy science juice or super serum injected into plants. when in reality it is very literally just the natural advancement of what humans have done with plants for millennia. "oh hey, this grass is better to eat than this grass, let me artificially increase it's population and elevate those traits" to "this plant is neat, and this plant is neat, I wonder if rubbing their pollen bits together can make something cooler" to "this is essentially just cross breading, but more specific, and with microscopes"
Organic industry tyranny for 32 years and counting: "Although GMOs are regarded as safe as their conventional counterparts by every major food safety authority in the world, the organic industry spends nearly $3 billion a year through over 330 different organizations leading with fear and “information spin” as an industry to sell their products. By creating an unfounded fear that requires tighter regulations on GMO crops, they are hoping to force them out of the food supply, thereby creating a bigger market share to sell more products in their more than $65 billion wheelhouse.
The unfortunate consequence of these [non-GMO] labels is that the food companies and lobbyists tend to create an unnecessary “us vs. them” divide. When food companies use fear against competitors to sell a product, farmers take it personally."
Now why do you suppose organic food is so expensive?? Imagine what 3 billion dollars could do for humanitarian goals – end a different disease forever every year…. End all hunger in at least one country…… Funding nasty propaganda? Really??
I would note the testing of GMOs is a problem currently as isolating a test population is challenging because it may require separate air, soil, and water supplies as well as procedures to prevent contamination via the researchers or other workers. Unfortunately, the safest place to test these would be on an isolated extraterrestrial station which is not practical currently.
The narrator apparently only read the talking points of the chemical industry. What a simplistic and uninformed video. No mention of concerns over the patenting of seeds or the dangers of giving the biotech industry monopolistic power over our food supply. Let us not forget four seed companies now control more than 60 percent of the global market and these seed companies are not just into seeds, but selling more herbicides and pesticides.
No mention that the Golden Rice plant was never apparently viable anyway. "When they introduced the engineered DNA, their high-yielding and agronomically superior Indian rice variety became pale and stunted, flowering was delayed and the roots grew abnormally. Yields were so reduced that it was unsuitable for cultivation." https://www.independentsciencenews.org/health/goodbye-golden-rice-gm-trait-leads-to-drastic-yield-loss/
No mention that the FDA determined “the concentration of β-carotene in GR2E rice is too low to warrant a nutrient content claim.“
In an attached memo, FDA notes the beta-carotene content of unmilled Golden Rice GR2E ranged from 0.50-2.35ug/g (FDA 2018a). That is, beta-carotene levels in Golden Rice are both low and variable. This compares to beta-carotene levels measured in non-GMO foods such as fresh carrot (13.8-49.3ug/g; Schaub et al. 2017); Asian greens (19.74-66.04 ug/g; Chandra-Hioe et al. 2017); and spinach (111ug/g; Li et al. 2017)." https://www.independentsciencenews.org/news/gmo-golden-rice-offers-no-nutritional-benefits-says-fda/
When you actually listen to both sides instead of only reading the talking points of the chemical industry you can learn things.
Potatoes have a carcinogen that forms after its cooked above a specific temperature, which most potato products are.. A group genetically modified a strain of potatoes to have a significantly reduced amount of this carcinogen, and the non-gmo crowd slapped it down.
Am i wrong or were the GMO corn before this bacteria that produced poison against pests that was also harmfull to humans. I saw a documentary here on youtube long time ago and they said thousands of people actualy died and thousands more got digestive problems/diseases from ingeting that GMO food. Im curious because the narator lady said there were never any proof found that GMO was harmful to humans.
Russian social media ‘bots’ push GMO-autism link, new report shows
"Social media accounts sponsored by the Kremlin have whipped up fears about western food and water supplies, analysis shows.
Scores of tweets sent from accounts controlled by Russia have portrayed genetically modified (GM) foods as dangerous, and attacked companies that deal in the technology. Most of the accounts purported to be run by westerners. Experts say that the tweets are part of a bigger campaign to spread disinformation in the West.
Accounts known to have been controlled by a troll farm linked to the Kremlin pushed baseless claims of a link between GM crops and autism. Dozens of the accounts also stoked unease over the safety of glyphosate, a common weedkiller. One tweet read: “Massachusetts Institute of Technology doctor reveals link between #glyphosate, GMOs and the autism epidemic.” One message suggested that fluoride in water caused cancer.
Renée DiResta, a specialist in disinformation who has advised the US Congress, said that the anti-GM messages were part of a tapestry of disinformation aimed at discrediting accepted science …. Analysis conducted for The Times suggests that discussion of GM online was being manipulated by automated social media accounts, or bots. Ms DiResta collected about 241,000 tweets and retweets from the discussion on Twitter about GMO over 60 days." https://geneticliteracyproject.org/2018/10/09/russian-social-media-bots-push-gmo-autism-link-new-report-shows/

Lost me at the Monsanto derp. "We could make a whole video about the shady business practices of Monsanto…" go on then.
What a beautiful explanation. Not all GMOs are inherently bad but its so important to go deeper to see the risks in some aspects of GMOs.
Really good video. Unfortunately, I have a bit of trouble hearing what the narrator is saying.

The potato famine might have been caused by the blight, but the Brits starved the Irish by taking all of their meat and corn crops in exports.
