In the area I grew up in Northeast Oregon it is black and grows on the local ponderosa pine and lodgepole pine. You won't find it within reach of the ground because the deer eat whatever they can reach especially in winter. Years ago I was cutting firewood in the mountians in December. I dropped several dead lodgepole pine for my load. When I stopped to eat my lunch I sat on the tailgate of my truck. Within just a few minutes six deer came through the trees and began eating the moss from the tops of the trees. They ate it like it was cotton candy for them. I sat motionless and watched them they came within twenty feet of me.
