Some folk think it is an addict's just desserts if the drugs they took, in time, start deteriorating their mental faculties. This is why they cannot see it the same as Dementia and other out-of-one's-control illnesses. You have to enlighten folk about the disease of addiction and you have to get folk to soften up with their "it is what you get for using drugs" perspective of thought. You have to get folk to stop aiming to penalize addicts for being addicts. Yes, addicts need to answer for their actions when their actions harm folk but when it is just about their addiction, working on their disease means not exasperating it by ignoring it. Drugs do damage to our physics.
