Okay, time to start training like a Marathon Runner
Becoming a marathon runner, it’s time! And thanks to Dr Teal’s for a solid haul of recovery goodness! #giftedbydrteals! Commissions earned through the Amazon …
In Austria we are still in late autumn and the valleys are almost everywhere snowfree. I am taking it slow, finishing the season with easy and joy-runs keeping the volume more or less high, between 40 and 60K per week. November is very uncomfortable in Austria, it is getting better when everything is white. Greetings from Salzburg/Austria!
6:21 “You will make progress everyone, you will make progress—if you’re consistent. Only if you’re consistent.” I wish I learned that many many years ago, but I’ll take it now. Thanks Seth!
QOD Living and running in the UK, 13 weeks until my next half marathon. Swimming 2 to 3 times a week to maintain and build my aerobic base. Faster treadmill sessions twice a week with two longer outdoor runs a week. Trying to build strength in the gym when Im there and and doing as much mobility as I can first thing on a morning. This is the plan at least, reality is somewhat different.
I’m in Northern Michigan. November through March is snowshoe running time. There is no better workout. People say XC skiing is (and I XC ski) but they clearly haven’t tried snowshoe running. The heart rate goes through the roof. You can coast/recover on downhills with XC skis – not the case with snowshoes. Hill repeats are insane. Dion’s are the way to go.
QOD: I'm transitioning from marathon training to keeping at half marathon shape while snowboarding during the winter. When summer rolls around, I will be starting a new full marathon training cycle!
hoping to get into the winter training not mush to prepare because I have done it a lot – looking forward to finally being healthy – may be doing more of a low heart rate kind of thing…
QD: Going great so far, consistently hitting 50+ mile weeks going into Spring marathon prep. Weather is getting cold so my times are getting better but always have trouble keeping my hands from freezing below zero temperatures no matter what I do. Maybe a combination of it always being so windy and my hands sweating so much. Definitely try to do most of the runs while there is still daylight, but getting hard as it starts to get dark around 5:30 pm now.
QOD-I've got 2 weeks until I run the California International Marathon in Sacramento. Then it's a week with no running and then 2 weeks of very easy runs until the end of the year. Between now and the end of the year, I'll figure out which races I want to run and then draft my training plan.
My transition isnt going to well, end of spring and we are already reaching 38°C by the afternoon and its not even summer yet. Find it hard to run in that weather after a hard physical day at work. Trying to get in whatever runs I can early morning on weekends at the moment. Winter is our best running weather here where I live in Australia.
Critic: You might not like this, but your decision making has been all over the place. 2 marathons in 2 weeks, 2 weeks before an important championship race to represent the USA?
Now you're only left with 57 days to prepare for a marathon where you have to taper for 2-3 weeks … good luck with that.
Interesting point about the camaraderie, Kipchoge also mentions that marathon should be a team sport. Human beings are meant to run in groups, syncing steps w each other and using that rhythm to raise above the pain
In my opinion you can be a world class mountain runner, but if road marathons is what your heart is asking for then road marathons it is my man, i know you'll get it done!!!!
I started watching your channel around the time you did a collab with kofuzi. I’m running my first marathon in Houston, and it’s awesome to watch you train for it at the same time!
QOD: transition to XC skiing to optimize all those stability muscles without injury and train to HR. Helps when you can't get the time on feet due to cold/snow!
QOD: The transition into winter running has been tough… Especially since do all my runs in the mornings. I live about an hour north of Toronto and its already freezing out for runs… Not looking forward to January and February lol
QOTD: Winter has come early to Ontario, Canada – 40 minutes north of Toronto to be exact. Big challenge is picking routes which are (relatively) clear of snow and ice. Subdivision sidewalks aren't great, roads are too narrow when snow is piled up – so hitting park paved trails is usually the best option. Luckily there's a great trail system in my town, Newmarket – but it can become a little boring running the same paths – could be worse. Dialing in the clothing is always a challenge – trying to find the Goldie Locks perfect combination – not too hot, not too cold. Protecing the face/bare skin when it's -20 is always a challenge, as is running with so much gear it feels like a snowsuit. Running indoors is always an option, but with the lack of sunlight during the winter months, getting outside for vitamin D is much needed for my physical and mental health. Seth, as for the marathon specific training, I think it's awesome and practical. Like the advice you so wisesly give, be weary of changing the training too drastically too soon – baby steps. I have never been nor will I ever be in your league when it comes to speed, but for me, being strong, bulletproof and tough has helped with results vs any specific kinds of training. The last 5 miles of a marathon is about suffering. Regardless of the type of runs, terrain, speed or cadence, the BIG QUESTION is, will your training prepare you for the suffering so you can maintain the speed, not necessarily gain the speed? As I routinely say, you can't bank time, but you can bank energy! Keep up the great work. You've a lot of people pulling for you. You've inspired so many – myself included. I'm back in the long-distance mindset hoping to once again to qualify and run Boston. Tomorrow's run is a 15 km, 9+ mile base builder – baby steps, baby steps. Cheers!
You are a minor celebrity at road marathons, and who wouldn't love that? Amsterdam and NYC looked incredibly fun, and I can't imagine those shout-outs ever getting old. Looking forward to tracking you in Houston.
QD: Generally, I prefer training in the cold over training in the heat, so the transition is OK for me. Not to say it can't get tough when winter storms and polar vortex's come – then I go with the treadmill. The outlook for the northeast US is for lots of snow and cold, so I may try to supplement running with x-c skiing. My running club's training plan for Boston starts Christmas week, so for now I can just run informal "base miles" to keep fitness up.
QD: my transition has been really rough. Got some tendonitis from a combination of the cold and slippery roads and transition to pavement. Wisconsin winter is brutal.
Getting chilly here in NH, fortunately no snow yet, has been an easy transition coming into "winter", have to be flexible because the weather can change anytime and it will shift your training. just working on base mileage, trying to stay healthy as I hope to attempt my first ultra in June (scared to sign up)
Me(18) and a friend of mine(17) have started marathon training and today we did a 16 mile and it destroyed us. Last week we did 14 and it was a breeze but today's run was hell.
QD: Weather in the UK is very wet and pretty miserable at the moment. Fluctuating temps getting down to 0. Water logged routes and flooded access points sadly, so sticking with tarmac or treadmill
Running form: I did a vid on my channel showing how my running form has changed after some advice from a running physio (and experienced runner himself). It still shocks me how poor my form was, but I knew no different of course.
I always hated the wintertime because cycling in the winter is no fun because I'm always cold no metter what I wear but running have made a massive change because I actually recently discovered that i love to run in the cold ( 2°celcius) so my winter will be amazing this year!!

Foam roller! Your emphasis on this has made me introduce this into my daily routine and now I cannot do without it. Grateful to you for that.

QD: It is Michigan (lol!) already had 10" of snow two weeks. Today's hard workout on clear roads and 37 degrees felt like paradise!

Im from latvia I hate winter
QOD: I'm in Florida. We get one or if were lucky 2 weeks in the 50 Fahrenheits
Sage is running Houston too🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️
Keep up the good work Seth! I almost took it easy this morning but your videos make me want to go for a run. Thanks for the kudos the other day too 😎👍

Winter running is so much better than brutal NYC heat and humidity.
This vlog dragged a bit for me. Still love the channel

Nothin says ‘just keepin it real’ like an up close camera angle of rubbing cream into feet 🦶 😂
Seth you will enjoy Houston. Pretty flat Hope I get to see you there
I've got too much bounce, sway side to side too much (weak hips), and I land forefoot too far ahead. Any tips?

Q&A with TRuE LOvE! (What's she thinking about all this running!!?)
